Course Outline
The purpose of this course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to convey a message through photographic images. Photography is an art, and the artist requires technical knowledge and creative vision to create images that have meaning. Students will understand that good pictures take planning and great pictures take skill and artistry. This course will develop artistry by exploring the technical and creative aspects of taking photographs with digital cameras, and will also explore the history and development of photography.
Students will:
Learn how cameras work, and complete hands on assignments that explore light, white balance, exposure, depth of field, using the histogram, aperture, shutter speed, ISO,composition and focus.
Students will:
1. Define the purpose and audience for an image.
2. Conceive still images that will communicate messages.
3. Capture a still images with a pinhole camera and a digital camera upload, label and file them
4. Manipulate digital images to create new images by:
• Using effects tools in Photocat
• Using Editing tools in Photoca
• Apply filters and effects
5. Select the graphic file format best suited to the end product and purpose of the image
(examples: image size, resolution, compression)
6. Demonstrate creativity in the production of graphic images
7. Critique and suggest improvements for an image using given technical and aesthetic criteria.
8. Accept critique of an image and make changes based on the feedback.
9. Understand the basic manual controls that are generic to digital cameras.
10. Explore pinhole photography and the history of photography from beginning to present day.
11. Learn how to upload digital pictures, and how to make photo albums and collages
12. Keep a journal that details their findings, questions, responses to assignments and ideas about their own work and the work of their peers.
Journal responses to assignments are integral to the evaluation of the student’s progress
in the course.
Assessment
Photo Assignments 60%
Tests and Written Responses 20%
Final Project 20%
Each unit will have a written component and photo assignments. Students will also complete a final project that will involve displaying their best photographs in a gallery that they help to create in the school.
Assignments, written work, tests and the final project will incorporates multiple skills learned throughout the course.
